This historic home originally had an unfinished basement and a small dark kitchen. The homeowners wanted to transform their home to fit their modern sensibilities with an emphasis on open spaces for the family to share. We formed a collaborative team with the homeowners and their designer early in the renovation process to lend our expertise before and throughout construction.
We carefully removed walls and added windows to create a bright space for the kitchen, perfect for family meals and entertaining. Many discussions and cooperation led to the final design and layout of the renovations and additions. The original isolated and enclosed kitchen now opened up into a spacious family room. The marble counters and custom cabinets add to the brightness of the space with the natural light from the French doors that open onto the new patio, complete with built-in grill for the summer.
Downstairs the basement was completely renovated. Coal, leftover from a long dormant antique boiler, was removed to open up a large storage space. We excavated the floor in another area which was little more than a crawl space to create an elegant game room. The original brick walls were refinished and the new stained and polished concrete floor adds to the historic character of the home.
